Personal profile

Prior to joining ÃÛÌÒ´«Ãºmv Dr Safo worked at the University of Birmingham as an Experimental Officer in Metabolomics at Phenome Centre Birmingham, working on the H2020 PrecisionTox study and other metabolomics projects in toxicology and cancer research. Dr Laudina Safo graduated from the University of Leicester in 2013 with M.Chem Pharmaceutical Chemistry with a year in industry. She did her research with the Chemical Biology team headed by Dr Andrew Jamieson looking at synthesising peptidomimetic of the beta-amyloid protein as a potential cure for Alzheimer's disease. During her time at the University of Leicester, she was awarded a studentship by the Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC) to undertake a summer internship in Analytical Chemistry working with Professor Andrew Ellis and his team to investigate the use of proton transfer reaction mass spectrometry (PTR-MS) in medical diagnostics through breath analysis. She developed a keen interest for Analytical Chemistry after this summer project and then went on to study a PhD in Analytical Bioscience at the University of Nottingham, Centre for Analytical Bioscience (CAB) supervised by Professor David Barrett (funded by BBSRC). During her PhD, she developed and validated LC-MS/MS method for absolute quantification of intracellular metabolic changes in Clostridium autoethanogenum using liquid chromatography isotope dilution mass spectrometry (LC-IDMS). Her research focused on the use of mass spectrometry-based methods to optimise the production of native and non-native compounds present in the metabolic pathways of microorganisms to help reduce the overall global dependence on non-renewable fuel and energy resources. She obtained her PhD in 2018 from the University of Nottingham, School of Pharmacy and went on to work with the CAB group as a Research technician-Mass Spectrometry on the Beacon of Excellence- Green Chemicals project until July 2021. She continued her role in CAB as a Research Officer from July 2021. Over the years, she has developed LC-MS/MS methods for absolute quantification of over 100 metabolites present in different biological matrices. She has also developed LC-MS method for untargeted metabolomics studies with applications in disease biomarker discovery and clinical studies. Her expertise includes LC-MS(/MS) method development, untargeted metabolomics, targeted metabolomics, quantitative mass spectrometry, Isotope labelling/tracing in microorganisms and biomarker discovery.
